Engineering, according to ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) is "the professsion in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind."

Resilient design, according to RELi, "pursues Buildings and Communities that are shock-resistance, healthy, adaptable and regenerative through a combination of diversity, foresight and the capacity for self-organization and learning. A Resilient Society can withstand shocks and rebuild itself when necessary. It requires humans to embrace their capacity to anticipate, plan and adapt for the future."

Engineering serves the aims of resilient design by providing the methods by which Resilient Designs can be determined and achieved.
